In Robin Klein's poem "Amanda", a young girl, Amanda is constantly scolded by her mother for her behaviour and habits, which leads ger to yearn for freedom and to escape into imaginative worlds where she lives as a mermaid, a golden free orphan, and a Rapunzel like figure in a tower.

It focuses on the structures that a child is facing. Poet Robin Klein  makes the important point that children should never be deprived of their freedom. However, it is the parents who are responsible for the proper upbringing of their child. But that should not make the children feel imprisoned.

The poem portrays a young girl named Amanda who is repeatedly criticized by her mother for seemingly minor things like slouching, biting her nails, and not cleaning up. Amanda, is a portrayed as a dreamer who seeks escape from her mundane life and the constant demands placed on her.
