👇

* Introduction.

Dowry system is one of the old traditions of India. Dowry means gifts and presents given by the parents of the bride on the eve of her marriage. Dowry is a symbol of showing respect from the side of the bride towards the parents of the bridegroom. The word 'Dowry' in itself has a pious sense. It means that gifts should be given according to the capability of bride's father.

* At present, a social evil.

The times has changed a lot. With the passage of time the sense of dowry has changed. It has now become a social evil. One time was when people loved the word 'Dowry '. But at present, all hate the word dowry. The word dowry has become a shock to the heart of poor people and other person.

The birth of a daughter at the house of poor is considered a curse. Rich person spend lakhs of rupees on his occasion. They give a lot of money, gold or ornaments in the form of dowry. The poor also are expected to follow this tradition. It does not matter what type of life they are leading while supporting their family.

* Marriage has become a bargain.

Man has become materialistic. He runs after money. Money has become next to God for him. As a result, the marriage has become a bargain. Bridegroom are bought according to their status. The value is decided according to the rank of the bridegroom. If he is the officer of high rank, his value is the highest in the society. Doctor and engineers have a second grade status.

* Dowry is a curse.

Dowry has become a curse to poor families. Those girls, whose parents are too poor to fulfil the demand of dowry, are forced to commit suicide sooner or later. If not, they are tortured throughout life. They have to pass a wretched life. They are abused or scolded day and night like slaves.

Sometimes it happens that they are burnt alive. In the daily newspapers, we often come to know of such events everyday. It seems, torturing and burning of brides have become evil tradition in our society. In this way we can say that the dowry system is the rather bad of society for humans.

* The place of women in India.

In the past women were treated as Lakshmi. They were given respect in those days. It had been a good and pious custom in India only. In the world, India is known as cultured nation. But at present, Indians have forgotten the old traditions and culture. They have been influenced with the culture of the western countries.

They should know that marriage is a sacred ceremony. It is a union of two souls. Marrage is a life long process. For the sake of money, we should not kill this sanctity. We, therefore, must honour our women race. We should hold the position of women in high esteem. We should treat woman as an 'Ardhangini', or the partner of everything. She must have her share.

* Law against dowry marriages.

There are numberless Dowry deaths of women in our country. Our young boy and girls will have to stand against this system. They should accept marriages without dowry. Dowry system must eradicated from our society. Our government has made a law against dowry.

Tne dowry prohibition act had been in force since 1961. According to law in our country, taking dowry or demanding dowry has become an officer. There are several cases when girls have refused to wed the youngman whose parents are greedy of dowry. But we must know that only law will not be able to eradicate this evil.

Our young students should set an example in their own case.They should neither give nor take dowry in their marriages.
