The few steps of his cage

एक बाघ पिंजरे में है | उसके शरीर पर बनी धारियाँ बहुत चमकीली हैं | उसके पैरों के तलवे गद्देदार व मुलायम हैं, इसलिए वह बिना कोई आवाज किए चल रहा है | लेकिन उसके शाही चाल मात्र कुछ कदमों तक ही सीमित है क्योंकि वह पिंजरे में बन्द है | इसलिए वह क्रोधित दिखाता है परन्तु शान्त रहता है |

He should be lurking in shadow

Sliding through long grass

Near the water hole

Where plump deer pass.

यहाँ कवि जंगल में रहने वाले बाघ की बात करता है | वह कल्पना करता है कि वह बाघ छाया में घात लगाये बैठा होगा वह किसी जलाशय के पास घास में सरक रहा होगा और अपने शिकार की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा होगा | वह अवश्य ही किसी मोटे-ताजे हिरण पर आक्रमण करने की तैयारी में होगा |

यहाँ कवि कल्पना करता है कि जंगल में रहने वाला बाघ जंगल के छोर पर स्थित घरों के चारों ओर गुर्रा रहा होगा | अपने लम्बे तीक्ष्ण सफेद दाँतों तथा अपने पंजों को दिखाते हुए गाँव के लोगों को आतंकित कर रहा होगा |

But he's locked in a concrete cell

His strength behind bars

Stalking the length of his cage

Ignoring visitors.

वह बाघ जो कि जंगल में स्वतंत्र था, पिंजरे में डाल दिया गया है | उसे कंकरीट की मजबूत कोठरी में कैद कर दिया गया है | उसकी शक्ति को सलाखों के पीछे बन्द कर दिया गया है | वह आगन्तुकों की परवाह न करते हुए अपने पिंजरे की पूरी लम्बाई में चलता रहता है |

मुख्य रूप से इस कविता में कवि लोगों को एक बाघ के बारे में महसूस कराने की कोशिश कर रहा है जो एक पिंजरे में बैठा है और अप्रिय व बेचैन महसूस कर रहा है | चिड़ियाघर अधिकारियों की गश्त कारों द्वारा बनाई गई ध्वनि में टाइगर अभी भी कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं दिखा रहा है | कवि उसे अपनी शानदार आंखों से चमकते सितारों को घूरते हुए दिखा रहा है |

कुल मिलाकर कवि इस कविता में एक नैतिक मुद्दा उठा रहा है और वह पिंजरे में रखे जानवरों के लिए मनुष्यों की क्रूरता के खिलाफ एक मजबूत मामला पेश करने का इरादा रखता है |
