👉 What is the story of Holi festival ?

It's said that the Holi festival was originally a ceremony for married women to spread prosperity and goodwill on their new family. Since then, the festival has envolved to encompass much more. Now, one of the main focuses of the Holi festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil forever.

Good overcoming evil in Hinduism is rooted in the story of Hiranyakashipu. He was an ancient king who claimed to be immortal and demanded to be worshipped as a God. His son Prahlad was deeply devoted to worshipping the Hindu deity Vishnu, and Hiranyakashipu was angry that his son worshipped this God over him.

According to the story the Lord Vishnu appeared as half-lion and half-man and killed Hiranyakashipu. In that very good conquered evil. Another story tied to the Holi festival is that of Radha and Krishna. As the eighth incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu, Krishna is seen by many as the supreme God.

Krishna is said to have blue skin because as legend has it, he drank poisonous milk from a demon when he was a baby. Krishna fell in love with the love the goddess Radha, but feared she would not love him because of his blue skin but Radha allowed Krishna to dye her skin with color, making them a true couple.

On Holi, festival participants apply color to each other's skin in honor of Krishna and Radha. In this way, for told that we can say that Holi is a Hindu festival that takes place every spring. It's all about new beginning-Holi welcomes the spring season and celebrates the end of winter. The Holi festival always falls on Purnima, or the day of the full moon.

The science of using natural colours like turmeric is to cleans the body and remove unwanted accumulation on the skin. Holika Dahan on the other hand, is performed to burn all that is dry and dirty to pave the way for new life in the spring. Holi, the festival of colours is celebrated in different corners of India.

The different part of India with pomp and gaiety on full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar. We all are also aware of the legend of demon king Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad and sister Holika. I don't want to repeat that story again and again and again.

Have you ever thought that there could be any scientific reason behind the festivals we celebrate ? Here, I intend to trac the science behind the festival of Holi. Let's explore : Holi is played in the string season which is a period between end of winter and advent of summer we normally go through the transition phase of winter and summer.

The period induces the growth of bacteria in the atmosphere as well as in the body. When Holika is brunt, temperature of the nearby area raises around 50-60 degree Celsius. Following the tradition when people perform parikrama (Go around the bonfire / pyre), the heat coming from the bonfire kills the bacteria in the body and cleanses it.

In some parts of the country, after Holika Dahan (Burning of Holika) people put ash on their forehead and also mix chandan (Paste of sandal wood) which the young leaves and flowers of the mango tree and consume. It is believed to promote good health. This is the time, when people get the feeling of tardiness.

This is quite natural for the body to experiences some tardiness because of change in weather from cold to the hot in the atmosphere. To counter this laziness, people sing songs, Phag jogira etc. with Dhol, manjira and other traditional instruments. This helps in rejuvenating the human body with great joy.

Their physical movement while playing with colours also helps in the process. Colours play vital role in fitness of human body. Deficiency of a particular colour could cause an ailment and can be cured when that colour element is supplemented either through diet or medicine and other sources.

In ancient times, when people started playing Holi, the colours used by them were made from natural sources like turmeric, neem, palash, tesu etc. the playful pouring and throwing of colour powders made from these natural sources has a healing effect on the human body.

It has the effect of strengthening the ions in the body and odds health and beauty to it. Now-a-days market is mostly flooded with synthetic colours and herbal colours are not available in adequate quantity. Synthetic colours are also cheap and people feel we have to pour this on others and not on ourselves, hence they opt for it.

But they forget one thing that everybody thinks in the same synthetic colours. The synthetic colours available in the market comprises of toxic components such as lead oxide, diesel, chromium iodine and copper sulphate which lead to rashes on the skin, allergies, pigmentation, frizzy hair and eye irritation.

In extreme cases, it can cause serious skin diseases and clogging of hair damage. So we should deliberately opt for herbal colours even if it is costly. If demand increases, the cost would naturally come down. As per scientific evidence, during the time when Holi is celebrated the growth of bacteria.

If the really growth of bacteria in the atmosphere is at its peak. The tradition of burning Holika raises the temperature in the atmosphere thus, reducing the growth of bacteria and in a way lessening the occurrence and impact of bacterial infection.
