👉 Definition. (परिभाषा)

That work started in past and finished in past after moving a long time or short time is called Past continuous  or past progressive or past imperfect tense.

वह कार्य जो Past (भूत) में शुरू हुआ और past (भूत) में ही कुछ लम्बे समय या कुछ कम समय चलने के पश्चात समाप्त हो गया Past continuous  या Past progressive या Past imperfect tense कहलाता है |

👉 Recognize of tense (काल की पहचान)

इस Tense के वाक्यों के अंत में मुख्य क्रिया (Main verb) के साथ रहा था, रहे थे, रही थी etc.. शब्द आते हैं |

* As (a) He was going to college.

                  वह कॉलेज जा रहा था |

          (b) We were going to our village.

                 हम अपने गॉव जा रहे थे |

👉All rules step by step with suitable examples.

(1) Affirmative sentences. (सकारात्मक वाक्य) 

* (Rule) Sub. + Was/were + V-4 + Obj.

✓ Example.

(a) Students were laughing.

               छात्र हँस रहे थे |

(b) I was crossing the river.

               मैं नदी पार कर रहा था |

(2) Negative sentences. ( नकारात्मक वाक्य)

* (Rule) Sub. + Was/were + Not + V-4 + Obj.

✓ Example.

(a) Pigeons were not flying in the sky.

           कबूतर आकाश में नहीं उड़ रहे थे |

(b) He was not shouting loudly.

           वह जोर से नहीं चिल्ला रहा था |

(3) Interrogative sentences. (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

* (Rule) Was/were +Sub. + V-4 + Obj. + ?

✓ Example.

(a) Was Sohan working ?

            क्या सोहन कार्य कर रहा था ?

(b) Was the parrot eating the capsicum ?

            क्या तोता हरी मिर्च खा रहा था ?

(4) Interrogative + Negative sentences. (प्रश्नवाचक + नकारात्मक वाक्य) 

* (Rule) Was/were + Sub. + Not + V-4 + Obj. + ? 

✓ Example.

(a) Were you not abusing him yesterday ?

             क्या तुम कल उसे गाली नहीं दे रहे थे ?

(b) Was he not rebuking you yesterday ?

            क्या वह तुम्हें कल डांट नहीं रहा था ?

Note :

जो वाक्य Interrogative यानी प्रश्नवाचक होता है वो हमेशा 'क्या' से शुरू होता है और जो वाक्य 'क्या' से शुरू होता है उसमें 'क्या' की अंग्रेजी (What) नहीं लिखी जाती है बल्कि सबसे पहले H.V. यानी Helping verb का प्रयोग होता है |

What is the W.H. Family ? (W. H. Family क्या होता है ? )

The word in a sentence which raises question in the mind when read is called W.H. family.

जिस वाक्य में जिस शब्द को पढ़ने से मन में प्रश्न का भाव उठे उसे W. H. Family कहते हैं |

👉 Important hints about w.h. family.

W.H. Family न वाक्य के पहले आता है और न वाक्य के अंत में जब भी आता है तो वाक्य के बीच में जैसे - क्या, कब, क्यों, कैसे, कहाँ, क्या-क्या, किस समय, कितना, कहाँ से इत्यादि.... इसे दूसरे शब्दों में प्रश्नसूचक शब्द भी कहा जाता है |

* (Rule - 1) W.H.F. + Was/were + Sub. + V-4 + Obj. + ?

✓ Example.

(a) What were you doing there yesterday ?

            तुम कल वहाँ क्या कर रहे थे ?

(b) Where was she going yesterday ?

           वह कल कहाँ जा रही थी ?

* (Rule - 2) W.H.F. + Sub. + Not + V-4 + Obj. + ?

(a) Why were you not reading yesterday ?

             तुम कल क्यों नहीं पढ़ रहे थे ?

(b) How was I not going to office yesterday ?

            मैं कल ऑफिस कैसे नहीं जा रहा था ? 

👉 Six condition of the rules.

Sub. + Was/were + V-4 + Obj.

Sub. + Was/were + Not + V-4 + Obj.

Was/were + Sub. + V-4 + Obj. + ? 

Was/were + Sub. + Not + V-4 + Obj. + ?

W.H.F. + Was/were + Sub. + V-4 + Obj. + ? 

W.H.F. + Was/were + Sub. + Not + V-4 + Obj. + ?

Lata was singing a sweet song.

लता एक मधुर गीत गा रही थी |

Lata was not singing a sweet song.

लता एक मधुर गीत नहीं गा रही थी |

Was Lata singing a sweet song ?

क्या लता एक मधुर गीत गा रही थी ?

Was Lata not singing a sweet song ?

क्या लता एक मधुर गीत नहीं गा रही थी ?

How was Lata singing a sweet song ?

लता एक मधुर गीत कैसे गा रही थी ?

How was Lata not singing a sweet song ?

लता एक मधुर गीत कैसे नहीं गा रही थी ?

             

👉 Use of contraction (Short form)

(!) Was not        Wasn't       वजन्ट

(!!) Were not    Weren't      वन्ट 

 👉 Important hints about this tense.

इस Tense में कुछ वाक्य ऐसे होते हैं जिनमें रहा था, रहे थे, रही थी, के बजाय केवल था, थे, थी etc .. शब्द ही आते हैं यानी रहा, रहे, रही, Silent रहता है तब भी इस Tense में उपर प्रयोग किये गये Rules के अनुसार ही Translate होता है |

✓ As. (!) He was sitting.

                  वह बैठा था |

          (!!) I was standing.

                  मैं खड़ा था |
