Far far from gusty waves these-children's faces.

Like rootless weeds, the hair torn rund their pallor.

The tall girl with her weighed-down head. The paper.

Seeming boy, with rat's eyes. The stunted, unlucky heir.

Of twisted bones, reciting a father's gnarled disease.

His lesson, from his desk. At back of the dom class.

One unnoted, sweet and young. His eyes live in a dream.

Of squirrel's game, in tree room, other than this.

On sour cream walls, donations. Shakespeare's head.

Cloudless at dawn, civilized dome riding all cities.

Belled, flowery, tyrolese valley. Open- handed map.

Awarding the world its world. And yet, for these.

Children, these windows, not this map, their world.

Where all their future's painted with a fog.

A narrow street sealed in with a lead sky.

Far far from rivers, capes, and stars of words.

Surely, Shakespeare is wicked, the map a bad example.

With ships and sun and love tempting them to steal.

For lives that slyly turn in their cramped holes.

From fog to endless night ? On their slag heap, these children.

Wear skins peeped through by bones and spectacles of steel.

With mended glass, like bottle bits on stones.

All of their time and space are foggy slum.

So blot their maps with slums as big as doom.

निश्चित ही, शेक्सपीयर घृणास्पद है, नक्शा एक बुरा (अप्रिय) उदाहरण है | जहाजों और सूर्य के साथ तथा प्रेम उन्हें चोरी करने के लिए प्रलोभित करता है | उन जिन्दगियों के लिए जो धूर्ततापूर्वक उनकी तंग खोलियों (बिलों में कोहरे से अनन्त रात्रि तक अंदर की ओर मुड़ती चली जाती है ) उनके धातुमल (बेकार की चीजें) के ढ़ेर पर, ये बच्चे हड्डियां झांकती हुई खालों (त्वचा) को पहने हुए हैं (कमजोरी के कारण हड्डियों की छवि नजर आती है) और इनकी चश्मों के फ्रेम में टूटे हुए शीशे मरम्मत करके लगे हैं | जैसे पत्थरों पर शीशी के टुकड़े पड़े हैं | उनका सारा समय और विस्तार कोहरे से भरी हुई गंदी बस्ती है | अतः उनके नक्शों के साथ उनकी गंदी बस्तियों को जैसे प्रलय (कयामत) बड़े स्वरूप में सब कुछ मिटा देती है वैसे मिटा दो, खत्म कर दो |

Unless governor, inspector, visitor.

This map becomes their window and these windows.

That shut upon their lives like catacombs.

Break O break open till they break the town.

And show the children to green fields, and make their world.

Run azure on gold sands, and let their tongues.

Run naked into books the white and reen leaves open.

History theirs whose language is the sun.

जब तक कि राज्यपाल, दरोगा, आगंतुक न आ जाएँ, इस नक्शे को उनकी खिड़की (उनकी पहुंच) में ना बना दें और ये खिड़कियाँ जो उनके जीवनों को कब्रगाहों की तरह बंद कर देती है, तोड़ो और तोड़ो खोल दो जब तक कि वे कस्बे (गंदी बस्ती) को न तोड़ दें (खत्म न कर दे) और बच्चों को हरे-भरे मैदानों को दिखाओ, और उनका संसार बनाओ स्वर्णिम (सोने जैसी चमकती) बालू (रेत) पर नीले आसमान के नीचे दौड़ने के लिए, और उनकी जिभों को पुस्तकों के अंदर / ऊपर सफेद (पृष्ठों) पर वस्त्ररहित (बिना बाधा के स्वतंत्र रूप से) दौड़ने दो तथा हरी-भरी पत्तियों के खुले वातावरण में रहकर इतिहास बनाने दो जिनकी भाषा सूर्य के समान हो तथा जिसकी भाषा में सूर्य जैसी ऊष्मा तथा तेज हो और वे अपने जीवन में सफल होकर इतिहास रच सकें |

As per the elementary school classroom in a slum summary, the poet saw the kids coming from different families living in the slum to study. They had bright eyes but were marred malnutrition and poverty, just like their parents. They have the eyes to dream but not the platform to make them come true this poem.

Reflects the communal disharmony and inequalities in society the existed at that time. Through the poem, the poet wants to direct everybody's attention to the plight of poor students studying in a slum area. The poet feels that these kids deserve a fair chance in life with all the basic facilities and amenitie.

In this way amenities such as food, education and cheerful surrounding to study just like other children. He points out the faulty education and social system that force these kids to follow in their parents footsteps. The poet desires to bring a positive change in the lives of these students so that they do not become criminals.

The poet "Stephen Spender " wrote the poem "An elementary school classroom in a slum" and published it in 1964. The lines of the poem describe how deteriorating the condition of a slum school is. Stephen spender  has presented a true picture of the life of the school children living in the slum of Tyrolese valley of Austrian Alpine province. The children are in a very miserable condition due to their poverty and illiteracy. They are depressed. Their pale faces express sadness.

They look lean, skinny and bony. They are like rootless weeds which can't resist anything for their existence. They are physically very weak and under nourished. Spender voices have concern for these children who live all their life in slum and have no opportunity to enjoy the real blessing of life.

He makes a frantic appeal to the educated and affluent sections of the society to better the lot of the slum children through education. It will remove social injustice and class inequality.
