✍️ Answer. Zitkala was a native Indian in America. Other students in the school hostel behaved according to their culture and manners. She was forced to get the hair cut. So she felt her freedom lost. The Americans thrust on others their culture and they falls prey to these rituals.

वहाँ पर भारतीय लड़कियाँ कैसे (हालात में ) थीं और उन्होंने क्या महसूस किया ? 

✍️ AnswerIndian girls were wearing stiff shoes and tight clothes. They were forced to cut their hair. The Americans thrust on them their own culture and as such they fall prey to these rituals. The small girls wore sleeved aprons.

जुडेविन कौन थी ? उसने जिटकला-सा को क्या बताया ? 

✍️ Answer. Judewin was friend of Zitkala-Sa. She know a little English. She had overheard the white women saying that they would shingle Zitkala's long hair. She said that Zitkala hard to submit to them.

जिटकला-सा की माँ ने बालों के काटने के बारे में क्या बताया था ? 

✍️ Answer. Zitkala's mother had told her that only unskilled worriors who were captured had their hair shingled by the enemy. Among her tribe, short hair were worn by mourners and shingled hair by cowards.

✍️ Answer. When Zitkala-Sa was being searched the hall was full of loud voices. Then the steps were quickened and the voices became excited. The sounds came nearer and nearer. They peeped behind the large trunks and from under the bed she was dragged out. She was tied in a chair and her hair were shingled.

✍️ Answer. When she was found she was tied in a chair. She was shaking her head. She was kicking. She tried to be free until she felt the cold blades of scissors against her neck. So her hair were shingled.

जिटकला-सा कौन थी ? उसे कहाँ ले जाया गया था ? उसने वहाँ क्यों महसूस किया कि वह एक कोलाहल में सुरक्षापूर्वक बंधन में थी ? व्याख्या कीजिए | 

✍️ Answer. Zitkala-Sa belonged to the community of native Americans. Her long hair are forcibly cut by the school authorities. Zitkala was placed in the line of the girls who were heading towards the dining hall at that time.

She describes that they were the Indian girls who were wearing hard shoes and tight dresses. In her own culture, long and heavy hair was a sign of dignity. She wanted to keep the distinct quality of her culture. 

👉 Question (2) What special way of dining did Zitkala-Sa find there ? What did Judewin tell her and how did Zitkala- Sa try to escape herself ? 

खाना खाने का क्या विशेष तरीका जिटकला-सा ने वहाँ देखा ? जुडेविन ने उसे क्या बताया और जिटकला-सा ने स्वयं को बचाने के लिए क्या किया ? 

✍️ Answer. The tables and chairs were arranged in the dining room. A small bell was tapped, and each of the students drew a chair from under the table. Zitkala also pulled out the chair and sat down. But she noticed that all others were standing but she was sitting.

She began to rise up, but soon the second bell was tapped. All were seated at last. She heard a man's voice at one end of the hall, and she looked around to see him. But all the others hung their heads over the plates. This eating by formula proved too hard a trial for her.

✍️ Answer. Zitkala decided that she would not let her hair shingled. She watched her chance and when no one noticed, she disappeared. She hid herself in a big room. The pale face woman searched for her in the hall.

They found her under the bed. Though resisted by kicking and scratching wildly, inspite of herself, she was carried downstairs and tied fast in a chair. She cried aloud, shaking her head all the while until she felt the cold blades.

✍️ Answer. It was actually possible to walk the distance in ten minutes from Bama's school to her home. But usually it would take her thirty minutes at the very least to reach home. Many interesting things would attract her. 

👉 Question (2) What things attracted Bama during the way to home ? 

घर के रास्ते के दौरान क्या चीज़ें बामा को आकर्षित करती थी ? 

✍️ Answer. Several things attracted Bama during the way to home such as, the performing monkey, the snake, which the snake charmer kept in its box, the cyclist who had not got off his bicycle for three days and who kept pedalling as hard as he could from the break of day sweet stall, stall of snacks etc.

✍️ Answer. Some times she saw people from various political parties would arrive, put up a stage and harangue us through their mikes. Then there might be a street play, or a puppet show, or magic show.

✍️ Answer. The waiter cooled the coffee by lifting a tumbler high and pouring its contents into a tumbler held in his other hand.

✍️Answer. The street light always demonstrating how it could change the colour from blue to violet, the narikkuravan huntergypsy with his wild lemur in cages, selling needles, clay beads and instruments for cleaning out the ears. All these things would not allow her to go further.

✍️ Answer. According to season, there would be mango, cucumber, sugar cane, sweet potato, palm shoots, gram, palm- syrup, guavas and Jack fruit for sale.

वहाँ पर गली के एक कोने में क्या स्थापित किया जाता था ?

✍️ Answer. At the corner a threshing floor had been set up and the landlord watched the proceedings, seated on a piece of sacking spread over a stone ledge. People were hard at work, driving cattle in pairs, round and round, to tread out the grain from the straw.

👉 Question (8) What made Bama double up ? Why did she want to laugh ? 

क्या था जिसने बामा को तेज चलाया ? वह हँसना क्यों चाहती थी ? 

✍️ Answer. Bama saw an elderly man carrying something in a packet though he was holding out the packet by its strings without touching it. This made Bama to double her speed and laugh.

बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति ने जमींदार को पैकेज (पुड़ा) कैसे दिया ?

✍️ Answer. The elder went straight up to the landlord, bowed low and extended the packet towards him, cupping the hand that held the string with his other hand.

✍️ Answer. Annan was Bama's elder brother. He told Bama that the man was not being funny when he carried the packet like that. He said everybody believed that they were upper caste and therefore must not touch us.

✍️ Answer. When Annan was on his way to home. One of the landlord's man asked his name and where did he live. Annan replied on which street he lived. In this way he came to know his caste.

✍️ Answer. Annan told Bama that, because they were born into untouchable community. They were never given any honour and respect, they were stripped of all that. But if hey study and make progress. They can throw away these indignities.

👉 Question (1) Who was Bama ? Why did it take at least thirty minutes to her to reach home from the school ? What different things, shows or happenings, she used to observe in the way which attracted her ? 

बामा कौन थी ? उसे स्कूल से घर पहुँचने में कम से कम तीस मिनट क्यों लगते थे ? क्या विभिन्न चीजें, प्रदर्शन अथवा घटनाएँ, वह रास्ते में निरीक्षण (देखा) करती थी जो उसे आकर्षित करते थे ? 

✍️ Answer. Bama is also a school going girl. She belongs to a downtradden community. She is filled with anger when she see that an elder of their community is being humiliated by a high-caste landlord. It was actually possible to walk the distance in ten minutes.

She would watch the Pongal offerings being cooked. Then there could be some entertainments going on the way-a street play, a puppet show or a magic show. These were the things that stopped her at many points in her ways. In this way Bama was a active girl. 

👉 Question (2) What did she see once in a corner of her street ? Which unusual scene made her double up and laugh ?

एक बार अपनी गली के एक कोने में उसने क्या देखा ? कौन-से विशेष (असाधारण) दृश्य ने उसकी चलने की गति बढ़ा दी और हँसवाया ? 

✍️ Answer. One day, when she came to her street she saw at the opposite corner a threshing floor had been set up, and the landlord watches the proceedings, seated on a piece of sacking spread over a stone ledge. The people of her community were hard at work, driving cattle in pairs.

He was carrying a small packet in his hands. Bama guessed there was some things like Vadais in the packet. Bama wanted to laugh loudly when she saw this. He was holding out the packet by its string, without touching it. She thought that in this manner.

✍️ Answer. Bama told her brother that an elderly person of their caste was holding a food packet in a strange way. Her brother told her that he did so to avoid touching the packet. Thinking about the evil of untouchability.

Then the people would come to her of their own regard and attach themselves to her. Those words of Annan made a deep impression on her. Bama's brother told her about the social evil of untouchability. 

👉 Question (4) What incident had happened with Annan once ? What information do you find by it ? How do you take it ? Discuss.

✍️ Answer. Once Bama's elder brother, who was studying at a university had come home for the holidays. He would often go to the library in the neighbouring village in order to borrow books at that time.

He was on his way home one day walking along the banks of the irrigation tank. On of the landlord's man came up behind him. In this way in the olden days people of the high-caste came to know the caste of lower-caste people.

👉 Question (5) How did Annan motivate Bama to go ahead in her life ? Did those words affect on Bama ? How ? Explain. 

अन्नान ने बामा को जीवन में आगे बढ़ने के लिए कैसे प्रेरित किया ? क्या उन शब्दों का बामा पर प्रभाव पड़ा ? कैसे ? वर्णन कीजिए | 

✍️ Answer. Bama's brother encouraged her and advised her to study had to raise her position in the class. She did the same and stood first in her class. Now many people became her friends. Thus, she fought against the stigma of belonging to a lower-caste.

This followed the Bizzare incident when she watched a person of her street carrying 'Vadais' with a particular style as he had been mandated to carry, not touching the packets. If he had touched the packing, the Vadais could have been polluted.
